ICE Fishing
The main season for ice fishing is December to late February, when the ice is typically sure and conditions are right. Ice fishermen frequent Lake Avery and Rio Blanco Lake drilling their holes through the ice to try their hand at catching a variety of species of trout, crappie and bluegill. Lake Avery (aka Big Beaver Reservoir) is located about 20 miles east of Meeker on County Road 8. It’s not visible from the road you’ll need to watch for signs to the left and turn before you see the dam. Rio Blanco Lake is located about 16 west of Meeker on Highway 64.
