MEEKER HISTORY
Founded in 1885 on the site of a U.S. Army post named the Camp on White River, Meeker was the first permanent town in northwestern Colorado and remained the region’s only incorporated town until 1900.Rio Blanco County Historical Society preserves the rich heritage of the White River Valley by capturing oral history, maintaining the White River Museum – which houses numerous artifacts and collections from local pioneers, protecting and interpreting historic sites and providing historic education on many topics to serve the region and all those who travel to this area.
Your first stop in Meeker should be the the unique White River Museum, located at 565 Park Avenue! Here you can get information on tours, browse the museum and shop at the Gift Shop. The Museum is housed in two log buildings which were built in 1880 as living quarters for U.S. Army officers. Open daily year round (except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day). Admission FREE, donations appreciated.
OLD WEST HERITAGE CULTURE CENTER
Heritage Tourism is a vital part of Rio Blanco County! With the continued dream to renovate the 1970’s building at 517 Park Avenue, into an “Old West” themed building, theater and research center to enhance and compliment the adjacent White Rive Museum complex, it is destined to host more community and heritage events, history films and movies, genealogy classes, family research and much, much more!
